Conflict goes to the very heart and essence of storytelling – without conflict, there is no drama! Good drama shows characters in confrontation with each other as a result of their having opposite objectives. And when you put characters in conflict with one another, the audience experiences this conflict and they are drawn to the story.

“Without conflict there is no action; without action there is no character; without character there is no story. And without story there is no screenplay.” Syd Field, Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting (Dell Publishing, 1979)

Latin America is the most dangerous region in the world, and the situation is getting worse, a lot worse. According to a recent World Bank study, over the past two decades nearly every region in the world has grown safer or at least stayed the same, except, that is, Latin America. Latin America holds eight percent of the world’s population but suffers 40 percent of the world’s homicides and 60 percent of the kidnappings. The murder rate in Latin America is 26 per 100,000.  In Europe it is nine.

Of the 50 most murderous cities in the world, 41 are located in Latin America.  Mexico’s Acapulco ranked third, with 113 murders per 100,000 in population, behind the Latin American cities of Caracas, Venezuela, placing second at 134, and San Pedro Sula, Honduras, with 187, winning the dubious honor as the most dangerous city in the world.

1. After the Spanish and the Portuguese started settling in the New World, they spread diseases, diseases that killed the majority of the indigenous populations. This put these two countries and their interests in a very bad position as they already had established large plantations, but they lacked labor force for them.

Portugal though discovered a new way how to solve the problem. During their explorations, trade, and contacts in Africa, the Portuguese saw that they can buy enslaved Africans from the stronger tribes in Africa. They started doing this, and they got labor force, while the African tribes got goods or weapons for the slaves. The word quickly spread around and the Spanish started doing the same. Both countries bought and moved millions of people from Africa into the New World as a labor force for their plantations.

2. In order to escape the corruption, violence, drug lords, criminal, most of the people from Latin America are trying to migrate. Not all have the opportunity to do so, but the ones that can usually don't think twice about it. The migration is mostly focused towards the USA, and in lesser proportion to Canada, where these people try to get better life, better opportunities, and have their human rights respected.
