Rookie Leeds drew the visitors of Man City 1-1 in a thrilling match, in the fourth round of the Premier League, on the evening of October 3.
Goal: Rodrigo 59 ‘- Sterling 17’
Marcelo Bielsa and Pep Guardiola give viewers an attractive match, with 35 shots on goal. Man City did not win a second consecutive match in the Premier League, but Guardiola beamed after the final whistle. He even joked with referee Mike Dean.
Man City dominated in the first 30 minutes, with Sterling’s opener. Since then, Leeds awakened and played more elegantly. They took advantage of goalkeeper Ederson’s mistake to equalize in the 59th minute. Leeds could even win in Leicester’s style, if Ederson did not make a redemption. At the end of the match, the visitors pressed the pitch again, but did not score more goals.
The speed of the game was pushed high right from the start. In the third minute, Kevin de Bruyne wisely shot to the near corner, when 20-year-old goalkeeper Illan Meslier misjudged. Fortunately for Leeds, the ball bounced off the post, and no Man City player came in in time to kick in.
Pressure turned into a goal for Man City in the 17th minute, with Raheem Sterling’s solo. The English striker crosses the ball from the left flank. He made a maneuver to get rid of the defender, create a wider angle, then cut his heart toward the far corner. Meslier seems out of sight, unable to dump the rescuer.
After about 30 minutes, heavy rain made Man City reduce the pace. Leeds took advantage of the opportunity to push. 36 minutes, Stuart Dallas went up the left flank, over Kyle Walker to slip into the penalty area. But, Ederson rushed out to narrow the angle and save the visitors. At the end of the first half, defender Luke Ayling overtook Benjamin Mendy and Aymeric Laporte with ease. But his shot went lightly and Ederson’s position was correct.
In the second half, Leeds pushed up the squad and played a lot. Man City took advantage of the opportunity to counterattack, creating a tit for tat. After missing a few successful stages, Leeds equalized in a situation that few people expected. From Leeds’s corner, Ederson hit the ball and hit his teammate. The ball fell to Rodrigo’s right foot and Leeds’ record signing easily cushioned the ball into the empty net.
The game was even better after Leeds’ equalizer, with the ball up to two goals. In the 68th minute, Rodrigo hit his head dangerously, causing Ederson to fly and push the ball with his fingertips. The ball licked the edge on the crossbar and then flew out, before the Spanish striker’s regret.
Three minutes later, Sterling slumped into the box to face the goalkeeper. Instead of finishing, he turned the ball back, but did not handle it well and was hugged by Meslier in his foot. In the 73rd minute, Rodrigo passed the ball to clear the ball for striker Patrick Bamford to finish, but did not hit the target.
In the last 10 minutes, Man City overwhelmed him when he continuously put the ball in the penalty area. But, they don’t do as well in the end as tectonic or finish. Some situations the visitors demanded a penalty, but VAR refused. The last delicious chance belonged to Sterling, but he missed the column narrowly.
After the fourth round, Man City had only four points and one match yet. They are 10th, equal to Tottenham and Newcastle. In the fifth round of October 17, Man City received Arsenal at Etihad home field.
