Sergio Ramos scored from the spot as Real Madrid were made to work extremely hard to secure a 1-0 win over Getafe on Thursday night which saw Los Blancos take a huge step towards the title as they moved four points clear of Barcelona at the top of LaLiga.

Real sought a win to move four clears after Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw by Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Tuesday. Asensio made an astonishing return from injury against Valencia, but Zidane has kept himself from using him too often since then, he was on the bench. Hazard was out but Mendy and Modric came back after serving suspension. Vinicius and Benzema were on the top with Isco just in behind them. But Timor had a bad tackle through the back of Isco he was shown a yellow card straight away after 12 seconds! Getafe were the side with the most yellow cards, the most fouls per game and the lowest pass completion rate in LaLiga.
The visitors played with impressive intensity in the opening minutes, Xabi Etxeita hit a shot with his thigh which Thibaut Courtois did well to push wide. Belgian then had two another awkward saves from Olivera and Mata’s finishing shot.
Not being inferior, Getafe’s goalkeeper had a diving save from Vinicius after Mendy’s pass on 23rd minute.
Then Real had some disadvantage with the yellow cards of Dani Carvajal and Sergio Ramos, and the injury of Rafael Ravane, replaced by Eder Militao.
In the remaining time of the first half, each team had a situation could have been a penalty. Casemiro was fouled by Olivera and the Brazilian ends up on the ground inside the box, but the contact of the foul was actually outside the penalty area. In contrast, Olivera supposed Carvajal clipped his foot inside the box but the referee didn’t think so. Zidane would surely be thankful that his side weren’t behind after 45 minutes.
There weren’t many opportunities in the first 15 minute of the second half but drastically situations, accounted for 3 more yellow cards, 2 for Getafe and 1 for Real. Zidane made 3 consecutive substitutions, Rodrygo, Federico Valverde and Marco Asensio took place Isco, Luka Modric and Vinicius. Real immediately had 2 chances, but Benzema missed them all.
The turning point came on 79th minute. There was an impact in the area between Carvajal and Olivera, again, but this time the referee pointed to the spot and gave Real a penalty. Ramos stepped up, paused in his run-up and drilled a low shot past Soria, who went the right way, but could not reach the defender’s effort inside his left-hand post. Sergio Ramos had taken 11 penalties in the league and Champions League since the start of last season and he scored all!
Getafe weren’t giving this up just yet. They had 2 consecutive substitutions with Angel and Faycal Fajr came from the bench to find the equalizer goal but Real defended rigidly to safe their fragile advantage.
Madrid are now four points clear with five rounds of LaLiga remaining and Zidane’s side are a step closer to the title, which will be all but sealed if they can win at Athletic Club on Sunday.
“We haven’t won anything yet,” Zidane said after the win over Getafe. “There are five finals left and if we can continue with this solidity, that will be good.”
On the other hand, Getafe stay in sixth and are five points behind Sevilla in fourth.
